Spirituality Simplified: COMMUNICATION FROM GOD (INSPIRATION)

If you tell the average person that you pray on a regular basis, odds are that most would consider your statement to be nothing out of the ordinary. Conversely, if you tell someone that you actually heard a message or received an insight directly from God, it is likely that a majority of those same people will at least doubt what you say; at worst some might think that you could be a candidate for some psychotherapy.

This is primarily the case, because over the centuries many organized religions have made the point that direct communications from God can only be received by those acknowledged to be saintly or very pious individuals. Perhaps the cynicism of some people today can be traced to various televangelists; over approximately the past twenty years many of these folks have made it a practice to use their alleged messages from God to convince people to donate to their ministries. Whatever the reason, it’s unfortunate that such widespread skepticism exists about the concept of receiving messages from God, simply because it effectively undermines the willingness of people to give it any credibility.

While it cannot be indisputably proven that each of us gets messages directly from the God-Force, the fact that so many people report receiving Divine communications demonstrates that there is indeed something to this belief. As discussed in Chapter 1, since there is no way of absolutely proving that these alleged communications do or do not actually occur, then one must, at least, acknowledge that it’s possible that they do. Moreover, it is necessary to leave
behind the traditional religious position that only certain people can be conduits for God’s messages.

…Most people, at the deepest level, are longing to hear God’s voice, and as this excerpt from Neale Donald Walsch’s Conversations with God, Book 2 illustrates, God makes it very clear that He/She/It is constantly in communication with all human beings:

"I am giving you guidance every minute of every day. I Am the still small voice within which knows which way to turn, which path to take, which answer to give, which action to implement, which word to say—which reality to create if you truly seek communion with Me."

If we accept the premise that the God-Force is always in communication with us, the key challenge we all face in day-to-day life is one of discerning which of the various messages (i.e., thoughts, feelings) we receive or experience each day actually originate from God rather than from our ego-mind.

One clear way to determine the source of a message is to take note if there is any fearful thought behind the message. According to the author Sanaya Roman:

"Messages from your intellect are often based on thoughts of scarcity, guilt, or a need to protect yourself from some imagined threat. The messages from your Higher Self allow you to feel peaceful and balanced. Higher Self-guidance is often subtle and quiet, and is frequently the message that follows the first one you hear."

It is, therefore, very important to pay close attention to the nature of the feelings, thoughts, and experiences you encounter, particularly when you are in need of some guidance in making a decision. It is also prudent to avoid making decisions based on impulse, since choices made in haste are often driven by your fear-based intellect.

I have found that the most sensible approach when trying to determine the source of an inspiration, is to take a step back from your first impulse, quiet your mind as much as possible, and check your feelings about the particular message before taking any action.
